The world famous collection of German and French fairy tales titled "Kinder und Haus Märchen" (English: Children's and Household Tales), commonly known as Grimm's Fairy Tales, was published by Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm and Wilhelm Carl Grimm, the Brothers Grimm.
In 1803, the Grimms met the Clemens Brentano and Ludwig Achim von Arnim at the University of Marburg, who interested the brothers Grimm in old and ancient fairy tales. They started to collect and write down tales that had been handed down for generations. Among their sources were Dorothea Viehmann, and two Huguenot families, Hassenpflug and Wild, who introduced them to several tales of French origin.
They published their first volume of fairy tales on December 20, 1812, and their second volume in 1814.
